Building a local image library can sound like another massive newsroom project, especially when everyone is already trying to keep up with today’s stories. It becomes much more manageable when you stop thinking about photographing the entire community and begin with the images your website repeatedly needs.
Look through the stories your organization published during the past few months. You will probably notice the same places appearing again and again: city hall, the county courthouse, local schools, police and fire departments, parks, sports facilities, major employers, busy intersections, and familiar landmarks. Those are the photos we recommend capturing first because they can support dozens of future stories.
A good starting collection does not require a special day devoted to photography. Someone visiting a school can take a few exterior photos before leaving. A staff member driving past the courthouse can capture it from several angles, while another person attending a football game can photograph the stadium, entrance, scoreboard, and crowd. Each trip your staff already makes creates an opportunity to add something useful.
Titles matter almost as much as the photographs. “IMG_4827” will not help an editor six months from now, but “Bryant Police Station - Main Street Entrance” can be found and understood immediately. We recommend including the location, subject, and any detail that will help another person recognize the image later.
